Before we start

  • These slides are a summary of a course we give to newcomers that usually lasts much longer
  • Many details are intentionally skipped, but this slide deck provides reference points and links to get all the information!

Covered topics

Work in the Library

  • Open Mon-Sat, 8.30-22.30 (Entrance/exit from the lower loggia)
  • Wide choice of seats, first-come-first-serve basis
  • Bookable rooms: Discussion Room and Stockholm meeting room
  • Library is open-shelves (but several books are in dislocated storage)
  • No food, drink from bottled water only
  • No talking on the phone except in the Social Room

Borrowing books

  • 60 items (books, DVDs) at once
  • Most books can be borrowed for a month and renewed up to 24 times
  • READ EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS about your books
  • We enforce fines
  • Your account is blocked when fines reach €50

Book Delivery Service

  • Carried out once a day. Make your request by 8:30 to get them on the same day.
  • Borrow/return in: Palazzo Buontalenti, Villa La Fonte, Villa Salviati and Villa Schifanoia.

Need a book we do not have?

  • Suggest a book purchase or request an interlibrary loan

Purchase requests: a warning

  • eBook price on publisher’s website: €18.71
  • eBook price for library providers: $540.00

Interlibrary Loans (ILL)

  • The Library borrows books on your behalf OR requests a book chapter or article
  • 80 per person per year, free of charge
  • You may ask for single book chapters and single articles, it’s quicker and digital
  • If you’re leaving Florence soon, postpone your request

Purchase or ILL?

  • Was the book published in the last 2 years?
    • YES: request to purchase
    • NO: request an ILL
  • BONUS: check at the other Florentine libraries!
